Decorating Above The Sofa

Nobody puts anything higher than the couch. One piece of artwork is unlikely to make a big impact. Make bold and graphically striking artwork the focal point of your space. It will stand out against the background of your couch.

Do not buy a matching set

It is better to avoid matching sets when shopping for furniture other than a sofa. While matching sets can be convenient, it is not easy to mix and match styles and textures. Consider buying multiple sets and layering them together to create a multi-layered look. You’ll be able add the right pieces to your home over time.

Be sure to consider the overall design of your room before you buy. A matching set of furniture will not fit in your space. You can create a cohesive look by using contrasting colors and arm styles.

Avoid MDF furniture

You should look into MDF furniture alternatives if you own an older sofa. MDF (or medium-density fibreboard) is less dense and can easily be ripped apart in a year. MDF will not hold staples well so you should buy furniture-grade plywood.

MDF is made up of several pieces of wood that are glued together. Although it looks like real wood, MDF contains high levels formaldehyde as well as other volatile organic compounds. These fumes can lead to serious health problems.

Don’t overcrowd your living room

Living rooms should feel spacious and inviting. Overcrowding can lead to uncomfortable living spaces. To avoid crowding, keep the number of seats as small as possible. For a couple with two children, there will be three chairs and a loveseat. Place a second sofa or loveseat on the opposite side of the room if you are planning to add one.

A lack of space is another major reason for overcrowding. You may need to clean up your room after guests arrive if there is not enough space. It is possible to move into a bigger home, rent a storage unit or sell your furniture.

Create a feature wall behind the sofa

You can create an accent wall by placing a wall behind the sofa. This is the perfect place to hang large paintings. While a rectangular piece of art leaves more wall space, oversized art will increase the impact. A wooden panel with cutouts is another option for accent walls. You can also cover the entire wall with stylized flowers. You can highlight the cutouts by changing the grain of wood.

Another option is a gallery wall. You can also display your favourite photos and paintings on this wall. Wall shelves can be used to create a display wall.

Do not place anything higher than the couch

You should keep decorations to a minimum above the sofa. For additional seating, you can place small tables and chairs behind your sofa. Bar height tables look unattractive above the sofa and are not attractive. For the best effect, make sure your table is not higher than your sofa’s back. A table should be between 28 and 28 inches in height. You can leave the sofa as is if you prefer minimalist decor.

It is important to keep the sofa from any other furniture. It’s a good idea for the sofa to be at least 16 inches from the coffee table. This will allow you to place the sofa’s chairs and front legs.
